Veterans
We are honored by the fact that many veterans of the U.S. Military have made careers at GEO and contributed significantly to the company’s success. Historically, we have focused part of our national recruitment strategy on hiring veterans and those currently serving in the U.S. military reserves. In each of the past five years, GEO has been recognized by U.S. Veterans Magazine among its “Top Veteran Friendly Companies.” Nearly 1,900 U.S. military veterans currently work at GEO, accounting for 10 percent of the company’s U.S. employees.
We have thousands of military member employees in a variety of roles, from Cadets to Executive Leaders. No matter where you see yourself in your career, you will find challenging and rewarding career opportunities with an organization that understands the Military Community.
Why Work at GEO?
The GEO Group, Inc. recognizes that Veterans are a great source of talent to strengthen the workforce by providing distinctive capabilities and valuable skills developed through real-world experience. Veterans fit into the culture at GEO because they are performance oriented, have a strong work ethic, and thrive under pressure. Teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills learned in the military are suitable for many positions available at GEO.
GEO recognizes that in serving their country, veterans have trained to become a company’s greatest asset. Every year, we take a moment to acknowledge the 1,900 veterans we employ by personally thanking them for their service with a “salute gift” along with a letter from our CEO.
Join us and bring your unique background and skillset to imagine, influence, inspire and deliver projects that shape our world. In return, we’ll provide support, guidance and opportunity as you grow with a large and stable organization.
Veteran of the Quarter
At GEO, we celebrate the men and women that answered the call to service from our great Nation. They answered this call selflessly, with great courage, dedication and personal sacrifice so that we Americans can continue to enjoy the freedom and liberties that we hold so dear.
One way that in which we do this is with a quarterly recognition program. Through this program, each GEO facility nominates a Veteran or Active Duty Service Member who has made a significant impact in their work and local community.
The Veteran of the Quarter Award consists of a personalized Engraved Plaque and a feature on our “Hiring Heroes Page”.
What Our Veterans Are Saying
What advice would you tell individuals transitioning from the military to civilian life to make it easier for them?
“The transition from military to civilian life leads veterans down a path of many twists and turns. I spent 23 years on active duty with six combat tours. I was scared to leave the Army. Research has found about a quarter of veterans struggle to adjust to life after their days in the service were behind them. However, transitioning out of the military can also be a positive and rewarding experience. For veterans who have built careers on adaptability and quick thinking, life after the military is just another pivot. With some careful planning and a positive outlook, you can set yourself up for a lifetime of success long after you hang up your uniform.
GEO Group provides what makes you still feel needed. The camaraderie and the feeling of always helping someone by still being able to facilitate training, and mentoring has helped my transition. A lot of what we do at GEO translates and just like the army, there is room to move up and keep yourself going. I wouldn't change a thing! Great leadership and training.”
What experience did you bring from the Military that has assisted you in being successful at GEO?
“The military helped me with lifelong principals and skills. It taught me to think critically, work with others to solve tough situations, embrace teamwork, improve my organizational skills, and set goals to achieve them before deadlines. In addition, I developed the integrity to work in a moral and ethical manner while managing a multitude of tasks at a moment's notice.
The GEO Group has give me an opportunity to finish my college education and pursue career opportunities. It is a family and friendly environment that allows everyone to grow.”
As a Veteran, why do you think GEO is a good fit for other Veterans looking for employment?
“As an Army Veteran, I would recommend GEO to any veteran looking for employment. Just like the military, this company is all about teamwork and common goals.
Similar to the Military, GEO provides a diverse workforce that comes together to complete the mission to be the world leader in offender rehabilitation. The skills and training learned in the military are beneficial to every operational unit in this incredible organization. GEO appreciates the sacrifices that veterans made for this country, and I feel it every day that I come to work.”
As a Veteran, why do you think GEO is a good fit for other Veterans looking for employment?
“As a veteran, I think GEO is a good fit for other veterans looking for employment because every single skill we ever learned and every single trait we have in our being can be brought to bear to make this company successful.
We have Heart, Discipline, Loyalty, and the ability to make GEO far better than they realize. Inmates will see the difference , feel the difference, and know they are taken care of. We work as a team every day we come to work. That's what I missed and that is what I got!”
