This position provides participants with the tools and knowledge to prepare for reentry into the community. In addition, provides individual and group counseling in self-esteem, problem solving, relationships, and other related issues. Counselors will assist the participant in securing direct communication with substance abuse, educational, employment and/or other free world community social resources that can assist in successful reintegration into society.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide information and guidance to the participants
  • Establishes a relationship and provides information on services offered at day reporting centers, parolee service centers, residential multi-service centers, specialized treatment for optimized programming, female offender treatment and employment programs, outpatient and residential treatment programs, and any additional transitional services developed by CDCR or the counties.
  • Assist participants in completing the appropriate forms regarding the transitional care phase of the program services.
  • Work in cooperation with the other contract staff, CDCR parole staff, the continuing care services providers, county probation, and the participant for the development of the community services plan and discharge plan.
  • Shall record in participant’s file, participant’s attendance in continuing care presentations, and meetings with parole, correctional counselor (CCIII) and/or the parole services associate (PSA) to discuss plans.
  • Develops transition plans in conjunction with participant and makes appropriate linkages to community resources prior to release.
  • Conducts individual and group cognitive behavioral treatment sessions as needed.
  • Actively engages community resources to work with released participants emphasizing the critical first months of release. Works to connect community resources and pro-social people with participants prior to release via telephone or through visits at facility.
  • Works to ensure participants obtain eligible benefits and proper identification prior to release.
  • Invites community-based providers to participate in resource fairs at the facility.
  • Gains an understanding of public domain services such as National Institute of Corrections, National Re-Entry Resource Center, and FDIC MoneySmart program.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings, promotes communication and the proper flow of relevant information between admission, staff and participant.
  • Compiles statistical data as needed for reporting purposes.
  • Works collaboratively with institutional staff.
  • Communicate effectively and coherently to administration, staff, participants, visitors, and the general public, particularly in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness and good judgment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate’s degree and two (2) years of experience providing cognitive behavioral treatment to the offender population; or
  • High school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience as a certified counselor providing cognitive behavioral treatment to the offender population.
  • Relevant teaching and/or counseling experience in a correctional setting preferred.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of professionals and have the ability to implement team strategy approaches to work assignments.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
