Summary

This position evaluates and diagnoses detainees for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders and then determines the appropriate course of treatment.

 



Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and diagnoses detainees for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders and then determines the appropriate course of treatment.
  • Evaluates detainees’ mental status to determine the need to transfer them to a more secure area due to increased level of suicide risk or their inability to adjust within the general population due to severe symptoms of mental illness.
  • Provides psychotherapy or counseling to treat a detainee’s mental illness or distress.
  • Treats detainees requiring psychotropic medication and provides individual psychotherapy as necessary.
  • Reviews and adjusts as necessary all maintenance medications at a minimum of once every thirty (30) days.
  • Prescribes psychotropic medication as necessary for the treatment of mental illness.
  • Provides emergency psychiatric care as required.
  • Provides in-service education for medical and correctional staff as requested. Documents all services provided in the detainee’s medical file.
  • Participates in review of the quality of care provided.
  • Instructs staff and officers in identifying those at risk for suicide, the process for referral to Mental Health, and subsequent prevention techniques.
  • Provides in-service education for medical and correctional staff as required. Performs and trains staff on crisis intervention techniques.
  • Performs administrative duties in keeping accurate records of detainees’ contact, documenting all services provided, filling out required reports and analyses as required.
  • Consults with the Physician or other mental health providers as needed for the proper health care needs of the detainee.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements



Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D. in Psychology from an accredited university.
  • Master’s degree in psychopharmacology as required to be licensed as a Medical Psychologist.
  • Current license as a Medical Psychologist in the state in which this job functions or licensure/certification in accordance with contract requirements. (Current copy of license must be on file at the facility at all times.)
  • Two (2) years of correctional work experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
