Summary

This position cares for, trains, exercises and works with the prison’s K-9 unit to prohibit the introduction of drugs and tobacco and control the behavior of the inmate population.



Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts daily roll-call.
  • Makes scheduled rounds of the yard to ensure that K-9 handlers remain in correct patrol locations and utilize the approved canine handling techniques.
  • Recruits applicants for additional K-9 handler positions.
  • Schedules all K-9 handlers for weekly K-9 training and conducts training as necessary.
  • Ensures that up-to-date records are maintained on each dog and handler and ensures all reports are completed and turned in on time.
  • Ensures that the kennel is maintained in a sanitary condition and any necessary physical plant maintenance is performed as needed.
  • Ensures daily that all dogs are well groomed, remain healthy and receive all required medical check-ups.
  • Coordinates purchases and maintains food, health care items, training equipment and other related items incurred to care for the dogs under the guidance of management.
  • Ensures that K-9 handlers implement and maintain current and up-to-date knowledge on proper principles of search, seizure and preservation of the Chain of Custody as it pertains to the collection of evidence.
  • Responds to emergency call-ins as required.
  • Reviews and assists in the development and implementation of security policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to the K-9.
  • Conducts scheduled and random searches throughout the facility and its compound as authorized by the Assistant Warden.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements



Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
  • Must meet the requirements of being a Correctional Officer.
  • One (1) year of experience working in a correctional setting required.
  • Must be flexible, intellectually alert, able to command the respect and confidence of detainees/inmates and staff, possess a working knowledge of correctional laws, applicable court orders and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.
  • Must have a proven work history with sound abilities to write communications, documents, policy, court room defenses, contract negotiations, and other required written correspondence.
  • Must be able to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to coordinate staffing requirements for security supervisors and officers.
  • Must have completed an approved training program resulting in a certificate of satisfactory completion. Ability to obtain certification for training such as CPR, First Aid and firearms.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to drive light vehicles, (i.e. passenger van, pickup truck, 4-wheel drive vehicles, etc.)
  • Previous experience working with specially trained K-9 is highly desirable.
  • Must be able to successfully interface with other law enforcement agencies and work in coordination with specially trained tactical teams.
