  • This position organizes and implements daily leisure time activities for facility residents of all ages, including team sports, indoor recreation, physical exercise, an arts-and-crafts program, religious programs and outside entertainment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates indoor and outdoor the entire population so that leisure time is well-spent and idle time kept at a minimum.
  • Supervises all hobby craft activities to ensure proper use of all hobby craft materials.
  • Makes outside contacts with agencies or groups to provide athletic events, musical shows, or other activities that will enhance the program.
  • Provides orientations for outside guests including institutional guidelines and program overviews so that security of the facility is insured.
  • Coordinates television committee for program selection to eliminate potential resident conflicts.
  • Assumes on-duty shift responsibilities, including accountability for residents and security of facility, as required.
  • Maintains awareness of and conveys resident communications to appropriate supervisors so that preventive measures can be taken to maintain the health, safety and security of the residents, staff and facility.
  • Organizes and implements daily recreational activities, including team sports, indoor recreation, table games, physical exercise and an arts-and-crafts program, so that the residents will have a variety of programs available to them during leisure time.
  • Maintains security of recreation equipment. Submits requisitions for replacement or additional equipment.
  • Maintains adequate levels of handicraft supplies by conducting a weekly physical inventory.
  • Orders replacement supplies and verifies purchase orders so that accurate accounting of inventory is maintained.
  • Makes necessary adjustments to weekly hobby shop lists; prints and posts hobby craft lists so that inmates are informed of what items are available.
  • Distributes hobby craft tools to inmates on scheduled days in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Maintains hobby shop and storage area in a clean and orderly fashion so that items can be easily located. Spots check inventory so that adequate levels are maintained.
  • Communicates with Inmate Advisory Committee Representatives so that inmate needs and special requests may be met or considered.
  • Regularly participates in staff meetings by sharing observations and recommendations regarding the facility, residents and staff relations to identify and solve problems and to ensure staff functions as a unified team.
  • Completes in-service training to meet the requirements for continued personal and professional self-development. (Full-time employees 40 hours per year and proportionate hours for all other classifications of employees.)
  • Maintains confidentiality obtained through job duties regarding employees, vendors, residents, outside agencies, etc., so that sensitive information is only given on a "need to know" basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
  • One year experience in group recreational activities, preferably in an institutional setting.
  • Must be able to motivate residents and sustain interest in a recreational program.
  • Must be able to se community resources to bring in a variety of recreational programs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with residents and staff.
  • Must have athletic ability.
  • Must be able to use computers and the software applications typically used by the department.
