Summary

Responsible for the facility safety programs.  Ensures compliance to all current safety regulations.  Provides consulting and guidance to facility management in assisting them to meet fire and safety responsibilities.  Monitors and ensures that facility fire protection system and equipment are fully functional.

 



Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understands facility specifications to recognize building and safety concerns.
  • Examines the facility’s permits or licenses to ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Conducts safety inspections through the facility, including tools and equipment, and on the facility grounds. Completes reports noting whether or not the facility with in compliance with company, local, state, or federal policies and regulations.  Makes recommendations to improve the conditions of the facility.  Notifies department heads of non-compliant issues.  Offers remedies when non-compliant issues are found. Re-inspects areas as required.
  • Establishes processes to detect, correct, or control hazardous conditions, toxic environments, or health hazards.
  • Observes employees at work to determine compliance with safety precautions. Ensures the facility personnel adhere to all building and safety issues.  Develops corrective training to improve the safety within the facility.
  • Develops new safety order proposal designed to protect workers from work methods, processes, or other hazard not previously covered. Develops training for facility staff to assist in maintaining compliance and increasing the facility’s safety procedures.
  • Ensures that proper safeguards and personal protective equipment are available, properly maintained, and properly used.
  • Establishes safety procedures for employees; inmates, detainees, or residents; vendors and outside contractors; and other visitors.
  • Formulates procedures for purchasing, installing, and storing new or updated safety equipment or hazardous materials.
  • Maintains an accident recording system to measure the facility's safety performance.
  • Reviews employee accident reports. Prepares files and forwards information to corporate for processing.  Analyzes accident reports to understand if any trends develop.  Prepares remedies for corrective action.
  • Conducts investigations of accidents, assesses property damage, and prepares reports with recommended corrective actions. May conduct interviews with appropriate personnel to fully understand incidents.
  • Conducts and coordinates safety training for all levels of personnel in addition to inmates, detainees, and residents.
  • Assists in the formation and operation of the unit safety committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements



Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in the behavioral sciences or related field supplemented by training and/or education in the principles of occupational safety and health, and safety training methods and five (5) years of work experience in fire, safety and/or occupational health and safety or an equivalent combination of work experience and education required.
  • Must possess extensive knowledge of state appropriate state and federal health and safety laws and regulations.
  • Must possess a high tolerance to mental stress, carry out moderately complex oral, and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of outdoor and indoor temperatures.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
